From the ground, darkness, vegetation, terrain and distance can make a deer extremely difficult to locate. From the air, thermal imaging can reveal heat differences that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye.
Thermal is not magic and cannot see through solid objects or dense cover, but under the right conditions it can dramatically improve the efficiency of a recovery search.

Contact us as soon as you decide you may need help. We’ll ask about the shot, direction of travel, last blood, property boundaries, terrain, cover and how long ago the shot occurred.
Coordinate the Search
We’ll review the location, conditions and timing, then give you an estimated arrival time and determine whether thermal conditions are suitable.
Launch & Search
After establishing a safe launch point and search area, we use the Matrice 4T to systematically scan fields, woods edges, creek bottoms, fence lines and other likely travel areas.
Live search viewing
You can watch the recovery search live on a 24-inch HD display while the drone is operating.

Thermal + Visible Imaging
We use the DJI Matrice 4T, an enterprise thermal drone equipped with thermal and visible-light cameras, telephoto capability and a laser rangefinder. When a target or point of interest is identified, the laser rangefinder can help us provide precise GPS coordinates for that location on the ground.

Thermal Drone Recovery in Kentucky
Kentucky Fish & Wildlife permits drones to be used to help recover an animal that is presumed dead. If the animal is observed alive, the drone cannot be used to pursue it or direct the hunter to it.
Kentucky also permits thermal/infrared-equipped drones to be used at night for lawful recovery activity. Commercial drone activity on public land is prohibited, and physical entry onto neighboring private property requires the landowner’s permission.

Can a thermal drone find my deer?
Sometimes, yes. Thermal imaging can help identify heat signatures that are difficult to see from the ground. Success depends on weather, vegetation, terrain, elapsed time and where the animal came to rest.
How soon should I call after losing the blood trail?
Call as soon as you think you may need assistance. We can discuss the shot, conditions and the best time to search even if an immediate launch is not appropriate.
Can thermal cameras see through trees?
No. Thermal cameras cannot see through trees, branches, buildings or other solid objects. Openings in vegetation and favorable viewing angles can still allow a heat signature to be detected through gaps in cover.
Can you search at night?
Yes, when the operation is otherwise lawful. Kentucky Fish & Wildlife guidance permits the use of thermal or infrared-equipped drones at night for recovery activity.
What happens if the deer is still alive?
If the deer is observed alive, the drone must back off and cannot be used to pursue the animal or direct a hunter to it.
Can you search standing corn?
Sometimes, but standing corn is challenging because the vegetation can block the thermal camera’s view. Success depends on row direction, plant density, openings and viewing angles.
Can you search neighboring property?
Coordination with neighboring landowners may be necessary. Permission is required before physically entering someone else’s property to retrieve the deer.
Can you search public hunting land?
Kentucky Fish & Wildlife states that commercial drone activity is prohibited on public land, so paid HeatSeeker recovery services cannot be conducted there.
What should I do before you arrive?
Avoid unnecessary grid searching if possible. Mark the shot location, last blood and last known direction of travel. Those points can significantly narrow the search area.
